MET(T)A is a new and innovative way to envision and implement Addictions treatment that is grounded in the well researched 30 year old theory and practice of EMDR therapy. This approach leans heavily upon the incredible work of those who have explored the use of EMDR therapy with PTSD, addictions and a whole host of issues, and upon the obvious and deep need for trauma resolution to be a focus of sustainable long term recovery.

Dr. Stephen Dansiger and Dr. Holly Daniels present MET(T)A Protocol, a comprehensive treatment protocol utilizing the frameworks of EMDR Therapy and Buddhist psychology. www.mettaprotocol.com

The MET(T)A Protocol article has been published in the international, peer-reviewed Journal, Substance Abuse: Research and Treatment. The statistics of addiction treatment and the co-occurrence of trauma and addiction indicate the need for a trauma-focused intervention to treat addiction. This rationale for the development of the MET(T)A Protocol, the evidence-base supporting the implementation of EMDR therapy, Mindfulness, and Buddhist Psychology to treat addiction, and the application of the MET(T)A Protocol are all discussed in the article. Additionally, the theoretical roots of the MET(T)A Protocol, treatment components, and treatment goals and interventions are also described.

The Spring 2021 addictions issue for EMDRIA’s Go With That magazine features Dr. Dansiger’s article “A Day in the Life of a MET(T)A Center.” He tells the story of how the first MET(T)A Protocol Center began, and how MET(T)A has grown over the last 6 years. He details his journey into EMDR therapy, the application of mindfulness and EMDR therapy in the treatment of addiction, EMDR therapy as a complete psychotherapy, the Palette of EMDR Interventions in Addiction (Markus & Hornsveld, 2017) and the further development of the MET(T)A Protocol. He describes what a typical day in a MET(T)A Protocol Center is like, and shares some thoughts on the future of EMDR therapy and addiction
